Hamburg is one of those cities that feels made for Christmas but also seems to end up off the beaten path for German Christmas destinations. The Rathausmarkt fills with wooden stalls, twinkling lights reflect off the Inner Alster Lake, and even the old brick warehouses in Speicherstadt seem extra atmospheric in December.
If you’re planning a trip for the Christmas markets, one of the biggest questions is where to stay in Hamburg.
Hamburg is a big city and the markets are spread out, so choosing the right base makes the experience much easier (and a lot more festive). After visiting ourselves, here’s a breakdown of the best areas to stay near the Christmas markets, plus some hotel ideas at different price points.

Best areas to stay in Hamburg for Christmas
Altstadt (Old Town) – For the main market
If it’s your first time in Hamburg at Christmas, staying in the Altstadt puts you right in the middle of the action. The Historic Christmas Market in front of the Rathaus is the city’s main one, and from here you can also walk to Jungfernstieg for the lakeside market.

Handpicked hotels in Altstadt
Fraser Suites – luxury in a historic building, a short walk to Rathausmarkt.
Motel One Hamburg-Fleetinsel (good value and steps from the market)
St. Georg – convenient & well-connected
Right behind the central station, St. Georg makes a great base if you’re arriving by train or want to be able to reach every part of the city quickly. The railway station also has its own market, and from here it’s only one stop on the U-Bahn to Rathausmarkt.

Hotel Europäischer Hof (classic, mid-range, right by the station)
CAB20 – Hamburg’s first pod-style hostel, near the station.
HafenCity & Speicherstadt – modern meets historic
If you’d rather stay by the water, HafenCity and Speicherstadt are a good option. HafenCity is sleek and modern, while Speicherstadt is the UNESCO-listed warehouse district, which looks especially good lit up at Christmas. You’ll be close to Fleetinsel Market and only a short ride from the centre.

The Westin Hamburg Elbphilharmonie (inside the Elbphilharmonie)
AMERON Hamburg Hotel Speicherstadt (boutique-style in the historic quarter)
St. Pauli – for something different
Not everyone thinks of St. Pauli for Christmas, but it’s home to Santa Pauli, Hamburg’s alternative market with live music and a bit of edge. It’s also where you’ll find plenty of bars and nightlife if you want evenings that go beyond mulled wine.

Empire Riverside Hotel (stylish and close to the harbour)
Motel One Hamburg Am Michel – (our stay in Hamburg) sits between St. Pauli and Neustadt, budget-friendly but modern and comfortable.
For a first visit, I’d recommend staying central — being able to step straight out into the Christmas atmosphere makes the trip even more special.
But with Hamburg’s great transport links, you really can’t go wrong. Whether you choose Altstadt for convenience, Speicherstadt for style, or St. Pauli for a lively vibe, there’s a stay to suit every type of trip.
