7 Airbnbs Near the Acropolis Worth Booking
After nearly five years of living in Athens, staying near the Acropolis is still one of the most reliable choices in the city. It is central, walkable, and consistently convenient, which matters more than people realize when planning a short trip.
Yes, the Acropolis itself deserves a place on your itinerary. But in my experience, the real advantage of staying nearby is not just proximity to the Parthenon. You are in the heart of Athens, within walking distance of major sights, restaurants, and neighborhoods, while still being close to quieter, greener areas when you need a break from the energy.
There are excellent hotels in this area, but Airbnbs can be a strong alternative, especially if you are traveling as a family, with children, in a group, or simply prefer a more lived in space.
If you want an Airbnb within walking distance of the Acropolis, these are solid options to consider. The prices reflect typical summer rates, and winter can often be significantly cheaper.
Areas to Stay in Athens Near the Acropolis
Plaka
Plaka is one of the most central places to stay in Athens and sits directly beneath the Acropolis. Its narrow streets, historic buildings, and pedestrian lanes make it feel very different from the rest of the city.
While it can be busy during the day, especially in peak season, evenings are often calmer once the day-trippers from cruise ships leave.
Staying in Plaka works best if you want to be right in the middle of the action and don’t mind a more touristic atmosphere.
Koukaki
Koukaki is one of my favourite parts of Athens, and also where Maria grew up. It’s one of those neighborhoods that has managed to keep much of the same atmosphere it had when she was a kid in the 90s, while still feeling current and lived in today.
You’re only a short walk from the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum, but the area itself feels residential and relaxed.
Over the years, newer bars, beer and wine spots, restaurants, cafés, artisanal shops, and bakeries have settled in naturally, without changing the character of the neighborhood.
It’s a great option if you want somewhere central that still feels like everyday Athens rather than a base built purely for visitors.
Makrygianni
Makrygianni sits just south of the Acropolis and is best known for its proximity to the Acropolis Museum. It’s quieter than Plaka but still extremely central, with easy walking access to the historic centre, public transport, and green spaces like Filopappou Hill.
Staying here is a good balance between crowds and calm, especially if you want to be close to the sights without being surrounded by crowds all day.
Thissio
Thissio sits just west of the Acropolis and offers great views without being right in the middle of the busiest areas.
It’s slightly quieter than Plaka and Makrygianni, but still very walkable, with easy access to the historic center and the pedestrian paths around the Acropolis.
The neighborhood feels relaxed and local, with traditional taverns, small cafes, and bars tucked along residential streets. It’s especially nice in the evenings, when things slow down, and the Acropolis views really stand out.
One of our favorite things to do in central Athens is a slow walk along Apostolou Pavlou pedestrian street, from Thissio Metro Station to the Acropolis, passing street musicians and pockets of floral and herbal scents along the way.
8 Unmissable Airbnbs Near the Acropolis
The Rooftop
While compact, The Rooftop is a great option if being as close as possible to the Acropolis is your priority. You’re right beneath the Parthenon, which makes early mornings and late evenings especially convenient.
True to its name, the standout feature is the rooftop terrace, set up with fairy lights, bean bags, and uninterrupted Acropolis views.
Inside, the apartment is simple and minimal with an earthy feel. It sleeps two and includes air conditioning, a Nespresso machine, and a drip coffee maker.

Why people book it: People tend to book this apartment for the location. You can walk to the Acropolis, Plaka, and plenty of cafés and restaurants, which makes it an easy base for a short stay in Athens.
The rooftop terrace is the big reason people love it and gets mentioned a lot, especially as a place to wind down after a full day out. The hosts are also often described as responsive and easy to deal with, which makes the whole stay feel straightforward and hassle-free.

The Sunset
Tucked into one of the more residential corners of Koukaki, The Sunset is ideal if you’re visiting Athens and want to settle into the pace of local life without being far from the Acropolis.
The apartment sleeps two and genuinely feels like a home away from home, with pleasant colours, comfortable furnishings, and even a wood-burning fireplace for winter stays.

And a personal bonus: my favourite coffee shop in Athens, Omsom, is just around the corner.

Why people book it: This is the kind of apartment people choose for its balance, central enough to walk almost everywhere, but quiet once you’re back inside. The balcony gets a lot of love, particularly after hot sightseeing days, and the hosting is frequently described as easy and attentive. It’s a comfortable base rather than just a place to sleep.

Phos
Set in Makrygianni, this apartment is close to the Acropolis without being in the busiest part of the historic center. Most sights are within walking distance, but the area itself feels more residential, especially in the evenings.
The apartment sleeps three and has a comfortable, straightforward layout with air conditioning, a small kitchenette, and a private patio with views toward the Parthenon.
The design leans slightly mid-century, mixing modern lines with subtle traditional touches. Being just steps from Pilino Yogurt is a small bonus and makes breakfast easy before heading out.

Olive
Olive reflects Koukaki exactly as I experience it, modern and inviting, with a subtle lean toward the traditional.
Inspired by Japanese and Scandinavian design, it’s the kind of place that feels calm and considered, and works well as a spot to recharge after a long day exploring the city.
Sleeping two, the apartment has a small balcony with a city street view, an HDTV with Netflix, books and reading material, a kitchen with a Nespresso machine, and both central heating and air conditioning.
There’s also a washer and dryer, which is genuinely rare in Athens and makes a big difference, especially for longer stays.

Acropolis Sky Suite
Last but not least, I’d probably book this one myself. It feels like a real retreat, but you’re still right in the middle of things, tucked between Koukaki’s restaurants, cafes, and bars, and just a short walk from the Acropolis and Plaka.
This is a small rooftop studio, but the terrace completely makes it. You have wide, open views across Athens, with the Acropolis right there, and space outside that actually gets used, especially in the mornings and evenings.
Inside, it’s simple and well set up, with air conditioning, fast Wi-Fi, a comfortable double bed, and a Nespresso machine. There’s no full kitchen, but you do have a mini fridge, kettle, and everything you need for easy breakfasts and coffee at home.
