Slow Coffee in Athens: A Visit to Omsom in Koukaki
There are few things I enjoy more when traveling than finding a great coffee shop, settling in with a book or good company, and enjoying a pastry while the day moves around me. It is one of the simplest ways to feel grounded in a new city. In Athens, this feels especially true because the city lives and breathes coffee. As I search for the best coffee in Athens, Omsom quickly stood out.
Omsom is a specialty coffee roastery, an artisanal bakery, and an all-day café in Koukaki, one of the most down-to-earth and creative neighborhoods in Athens, and only a short walk from the Acropolis.
Why Omsom Is One of the Best Spots for Coffee & Brunch in Athens
While the coffee scene in Athens is growing quickly, much of the city is still dominated by chain cafés serving forgettable brews in fairly standard settings. It can be surprisingly hard to find places that truly care about sourcing, roasting, and preparation.
I have been a coffee aficionado for as long as I can remember. Having worked as a barista and relied on coffee daily for both energy and comfort, one of my favorite things to do at home or while traveling is to seek out cafés that feel intentional. The kind of spots that offer a sense of place, good company, high-quality coffee, and something delicious to pair with it.
I am especially drawn to spaces that feel like a third place, meaning a comfortable environment outside of home and work where you can settle in, spend time, and feel part of the neighborhood. Omsom has that feel immediately, with its open flow design and wide windows that blend the indoor and outdoor seating into one breezy, welcoming space.
That is exactly what led us to Omsom, and our first visit left a strong impression. It felt like a space that caters to everyone, whether you want a proper coffee, a pastry, a cup of tea, a glass of wine, or even a pizza fresh from their kitchen.
Omsom roasts all of its coffee at its flagship location in Peristeri in west Athens, but we visited its Koukaki café, and it quickly became one of our favorites.
Where Omsom is Located in Athens
Omsom’s Koukaki café is located at Veikou 110, Athina 117 41, in a central and easy to reach part of the neighborhood. It’s about a ten-minute walk from Syggrou Fix station and roughly twenty minutes from the Acropolis, so it works well whether you’re starting your morning in Koukaki or heading toward the historic center.
The café sits just far enough from the main tourist routes to feel local, but not so far that it’s inconvenient. You’re still close to the heart of the city, yet the surrounding streets stay calm and residential, making it a comfortable spot for coffee, brunch, or a midday break between sights.
All of their beans are roasted at their flagship site in Peristeri, and the Koukaki café serves the same high-quality roasts.
What to Order: Coffee, Pastries & Brunch at Omsom
While we were tempted to try a pizza or peinirli, we had already eaten lunch and were far too full for a proper meal. But we couldn’t leave without tasting at least one of Omsom’s baked goods alongside our coffee.
I went for a classic flat white, and it was spot on. The flavor came through immediately, the size was exactly what a flat white should be (Aussie-style), and the foam was poured into a clean, classic design.

Maria is a cold brew loyalist, no matter the season, and since a good cold brew is surprisingly hard to find in Athens, she ordered one here. It was perfect—smooth, balanced, and even more flavorful than the flat white.
Choosing pastries was the hardest part. Everything was beautifully presented: simple, neat, and clearly made with intention. Since they make all of their pizza dough in-house, I had high expectations for the pastries, and they didn’t disappoint.
Most of the pastries are rolled buns with different fillings and toppings. We chose a dark chocolate babka cream bun and a black cherry cream bun.
The dark chocolate babka bun was rich and tender, with the dough twisted around dark chocolate and a subtle hazelnut-praline-style filling—and it paired perfectly with my flat white.
But the standout for both of us was the black cherry cream bun. A lightly sweet twisted bun topped with vanilla custard and glossy cherries, it had the perfect balance of creaminess, fruit, and caramelized edges. Black cherry in Greece is one of my favorite things, and this was the ideal afternoon treat.

And if you’re visiting hungrier than we were, Omsom also serves pizza, wine, and a solid brunch menu — all worth coming back for.
Omsom is the kind of spot that reminds me why I love exploring local coffee scenes. The quality is consistent, the space feels welcoming, and the pastries alone are worth the trip.
Whether you are stopping in for a proper flat white, settling in with a book, or looking for some of the best coffee and brunch in Athens, this café feels like a reliable third place in the heart of Koukaki. It is a place I know I will return to.
